Fall Fashion: Boots

One of my favorite things about fall fashion is boots! I love the knee high boots, and the shorter  biker boots, and every once in a while a cute cowboy-ish boot will catch my eye.
But last weekend, I went to the new DSW by my house  and discovered a whole new beloved category of boots: the back zip boot! It' easier to get into and the zipper does not strain on the side of your leg, like some side zip boots do. I tried on these Madden Girl boots, I like the little motto inspired details but there was no support in the shoe whatsoever.

Then I found some Born back zip boots when I went to Nordstrom Rack. I was filled with excitement and anticipation of finding cute shoes in my size but it was not meant to be. I found some in my size they were just the worst distressed gray color and would probably not look good with anything.
I overheard a girl trying on shoes talking to her friend comparing shoe shopping to bra shopping, you just have to be in right mood. So true. I found some that were super cute, though they were not in my size,what I would give for smaller feet lol. I am loving all the studding detail that's trendy now, I like the mixed finishes but this is really cute too. Just the right amount of tough with the right amount of cute.

So these are the perfect boots. The ones I will be waiting for.....comfy foot bed, pretty fall leather, the ideal back zip boot.

Pumpkins, Bunnies and Fashion Tidbits

I just can't seem to catch a break this month, but I'm going to keep on trying to make time for the things that make me happy. Like making new animal creatures. Even though it was 90 freaking degrees last weekend. I'm excited to share my awesome pumpkins with you.

I love the variation in color and texture

Now this next one is my pride and joy. Last year I saw this variation for the

first time at my local produce store. They were HUGE probably at least $30 per pumpkin, it was the prettiest pumpkin I had ever seen. I love the pattern of orange fading into green. I've never been enamored with a gourd before but it was definitely love at first sight.

 I spend a lot of time creating computer generated patterns for work, and it's such an inspiration to see this beautiful pattern exist in nature. Of course I couldn't justify spending more than $30 on a pumpkin last year and this year this variety seemed no where to be found, but I did finally find one.

This variety's name is one too many because apparently the stripes and pattern on the white background look like bloodshot eyes, the same look when you've had one too many, but I still think it's beautiful.

Lately I am revisiting my interest in drawing bunnies, I made a bunny birthday card for one of my friends, complete with little fat bunny cake topper. I think it would look too cute in a plush form, we will see how that goes.

Also I was kinda disappointed with the Neiman Marcus + Target Collaboration. Some of the stuff was cute, the little girl dresses especially, but so much of it would not make a great present in my opinion. I know why they did it so their bread and butter pieces (what each designer is known for) would not be threatened. Why would people who can afford to shop at Neiman Marcus want a cheaper version when they can buy the real thing? I get it, all I'm saying who thought Oscar De La Renta's talent was best showcased in dog accessories? You can see the collection here

In more fun Target collaboration news, Prabal Gurung (who's also apart of Neiman's collaboration), is doing his own apparel and shoes to debut early next year.

 His combination of bright colors and futuristic patterns is quite a feast for the eyes. I am very interested to see what all he comes up with.

Trial and Error

Have you ever done something in the spur of the moment, and it comes together fluidly and at the end you are quite pleased with the results? What about when you try to duplicate this process again later?
Things don't always go the way I want them to when I try to recreate what I put together the first time, often in the kitchen and this time with sewing.

Also, on a side note I think my interest in making plush sea creatures was somewhat inspired by my detangler hairspray.

I wanted to make a girl octopus, I elongated the pattern and made the overall size larger for an easier stuffing process.  Of course she would have cute little eyelashes, but for some reason my technique went very, very wrong.

I decided I didn't like where it was headed so I started over. I decided to make the eyes more circular and lower the mouth.

I decided to change the bow shape a little but overall I am quite pleased with her. She is going to the little girl I made her for tomorrow :)

Winter Wear

It's been a very busy week, and I feel like it's been forever since I have blogged.
It is not really getting colder here yet, in fact it is still very humid but that doesn't stop me from adding to my scarf collection! Target has a Halloween/punk themed scarf collection out... there's a skull print, a scattered safety pin print and a star print. The colors are deep and somewhat sophisticated which makes it a little more versatile. I cannot find them online yet, but here's a picture of the one I bought.

I like the thought of wild creatures wearing winter accessories, obviously they can make in the wild just fine without a scarf but it's kinda fun to picture them wearing one.

I started to redraw this little guy on the computer and I'm happy with the way he's coming along

I made him a little bit fluffier and tried to make his expression a little less sarcastic lol.
He's happy and warm in his scarf while the winter sky turns from blue to gray.

I experimented with knitted texture and the stripes which kind of remind me of the harry potter scarf, which is kind of random but anyway, I'm excited for it to start getting colder so I can break out my scarfs! I'm ready for Fall, I'm ready for winter.

Also, I have been entertaining the idea of getting a new dog more lately, as it has been a little over 2 years now since my dog passed away. Subaru recently put out a super cute commercial that tugs at the heartstrings, especially if you have ever had a pet.

The busy season is definitely upon us, for me both personally and professionally.
So here's some stuff I've been wanting to share :)

1. Burberry's new Spring collection. I love these colors and the fun take on trench coats plus  jewel tones my favorite! see the rest here

2. This book I discovered. Steal like an Artist. It has some interesting things to say. Like nothing new is going to be made, it's all been done. But there are different interpretations of things, so find people you admire and find out who inspired them and so on and so forth. Take parts of existing things and make it into something different.

Which brings me to number 3, the artist KAWS, I saw this profile on him a few years ago. He started as a grafitti artist, painting over existing ads. Then he started to experiment with pop culture, Mickey Mouse and Sponge Bob. I got to see his stuff a few months ago, and the way he paints, it just jumps off the canvas. Yes there's nothing new about borrowing from pop culture, but he is definitely putting his own spin on it, and I love it!
We got a temporary installation at theModern and I saw it last weekend. It looks like it was made for the building, if you ask me.

4. Then I started thinking about Sponge Bob, where did this idea that is now a pop culture mainstay come from? Well the guy that wrote it did study marine life and animation.While in college he wrote a comic about a sponge and changed it to a square shape because he thought it was funnier. He had a friend that was a comedy writer that happened to write for Rocko's modern life. At the suggestion of his friend he started developing it as a cartoon and after Rocko ended he got new team members for his show. So pursue what you love and surround yourself with great friends who can give constructive criticism and fun suggestions.

5. Frankenweenie! I can't believe October is finally here. I am a huge Tim Burton fan. He made the original version of Frankenweenie some 20 years ago. A live action black and white short, Disney shelved it at the time thinking it was too dark, and now years later, here comes the claymation version. I know it seems kind of morbid bringing a beloved pet back to life, and yes Tim is kind of morbid but he was a wonderful way of blending the weirdness with heart and I love him for that. On a side note  Tim Burton was inspired byEdward Gorey.
